Grunion Run 2010 San Pedro

From March - August, grunion fish wash themselves onto the shore 3-4 nights after the new moon. They come in masses to lay their eggs in the sand 1-3 hours after high tide. Grunion may be caught by bare hands (except April-May) but hunters over age 16 must have a fishing license.

The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium hosts this events which includes an educational film about grunion with a question and answer opportunity after the film. The aquarium is open late and there our crafts for children. Participants can also hatch grunion eggs in jars with the help of aquarium staff. Snacks, hot chocolate and cup noodles are available to purchase.

We spent a couple of hours at the aquarium, doing crafts, looking at the exhibits and watching the film. At about 10:30, the aquarium had everybody head over to the beach. We sat on the sand with our flashlights off and waited. We were all told to keep the noise down so we wouldn't scare the fish. It was hard to keep over 1000 people quiet especially since there were a few groups at the fire pits. At 11:30 we began to see the fish. By then my youngest son was asleep in the chair.

It was exciting to learn about the local habitat and see this fish that is only seen by those who brave the cold night.

Meet the Grunion will be held Saturday, May 15, 2010. The aquarium opens at 8 pm and the first showing of the documentary starts at 9 pm. It can get very cold and a blanket or chair would be recommended for the beach. Flashlights can be used on the beach once the grunion start populating the sand. Fee is $5 per adults and $1 for children, seniors and students. Parking is $1 an hour, however, there is usually only one booth open to get out and hundreds of cars. Free street parking is available on Stephen M. White Drive above Cabrillo Beach.

Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is located at 3720 Stephen M. White Drive, San Pedro, CA 90731. Phone -310-548-7562. Visit http://www.cabrillomarineaquarium.org/ for more information.

Adventure Playground

Adventure Playground is old school fun and a bargain. I refer to it as the mud park but it really isn't a romp in the mud. It is a fenced area with large trees, a pond, rope bridge, tire swing, wet slide, and a "building" area with tree house forts. It has a camp type feeling and is a place where children can play freely and safely, not restricted by play equipment or organized activities.

The pond, which is probably two feet deep is not for swimming. Expect a young counselor to yell on the bullhorn if rules are broken. She even threatens time out which works out well in this setting. Wood boards are used as rafts and sticks are used to maneuver them around. While the park is geared to ages 6-12, my 4 year old learned how to move the raft around the pond. My friend's son who is under the age of 2, took a ride on a raft with his big sister.

There is a rope bridge over the pond which leads to a small fort with a tire swing. Parents assist their children into the tire as it zips down the cable. The mud slide, which is a plastic tarp on a hill, goes into another small pond. The staff squirts a hose on the slide and the riders. The slide is open on and off throughout the day.

The "building" area has small tree forts and a pile of wood and old tires. Visitors of any age can check out a hammer and three nails. Yes, that is a real nail and hammer. To get more nails, you must turn in two bent nails or four pieces of trash. Saws are available to children 8 years of age and older. Children usually end up working together a la Lord of the Flies. Tennis shoes must be worn at all times at Adventure Playground. Visitors are advised to avoid stepping on nails in the "building" area. I found a couple of nails in the sawdust but they weren't sticking straight up.

Adventure Playground is open from mid-June through mid-August, Monday - Saturday from 10am - 4 pm. They are closed on Sundays. They start shutting down at 3:30 pm. There are two outhouses and nicer bathrooms are available across the parking lot at the library. Snacks are available for sale. Cost for admission is $3 per child and adults are free. Parking is free. Bring a change of clothes and a plastic bag.

I had a chair but wish I had brought a blanket too for the kids to eat their lunch. They didn't sit down much so it worked out fine. You can call Adventure Playground and see how many reservations they have for day camps to see how busy they will be. We went on a busy day and the kids waited about 10 minutes for each turn on the rafts, swing, slide and to check out a hammer. Mondays and Saturdays are supposed to be less busy. When the day camps left around 2 pm, there were few lines.

We had a great day and stopped at Chipotle Mexican Grill on the way back to the freeway on Beach Boulevard. I ate my favorite, which is a vegetarian bowl with chips, and my kids ate the beans and cilantro-lime rice. Our whole meal was under $8, but I always order waters which saves money.

Adventure Playground is located at 7111 Talbert Avenue, Huntington Beach, CA. Park in the library parking lot and walk up the hill where you see trees. From San Pedro, take the 405 South and exit Beach Boulevard and go right (south). Turn right (west) at Talbert and take it 1/2 mile until it ends at the library parking lot. Adventure Playground can be reached at (714) 842-7442.

Adventure Playground does no advertising so let's just say that this is our little secret.
